Months after the theft, the equipment turned up in an empty field far from the base, almost all of it, plus a box nobody had reported missing. The clues no longer hand you everything on a plate.

Suspects

• Amílcar, the farmer: The field is his. He says he never left anything there except potatoes.
• Brízida, the military police inspector: She reached the field twenty minutes after the phone call. Very fast for someone who knew nothing.
• Cecílio, the corporal driver: He drove the inspector. He says he knew the way because it's 'very scenic'.
• Desidéria, the local journalist: She photographed the equipment on the ground before anyone else. Nobody knows who tipped her off.
